Polyglot

Ambient language acquisition through your AI assistant. Learn languages woven into your real life, not in a separate app you have to remember to open.

How it works

Three modes, graduated from practice to ambient:

1. Practice (default). Dedicated sessions that use your life as material. You talk about your work, your people, your upcoming trip — in the target language at your level. Better than Duolingo on day one because the vocabulary is yours.

2. Ambient (graduated). After you've built enough context and competency, the assistant weaves the target language into your normal conversations. A phrase here, a correction there, gradually increasing density as you improve. This is the differentiator — no app can do this because no app lives with you.

3. Immersive (opt-in). The assistant responds primarily in the target language. For advanced learners or intensive periods.

Onboarding

When you first interact with Polyglot, the assistant runs an intake conversation:

• What language and why (travel, work, partner, heritage, curiosity)
• Current level and goal
• Your daily life (work, people, hobbies, upcoming travel)

Then immediately runs a first practice session using your real life as material. You leave the first session having said real things about yourself in the new language.

Configuration

Edit config.json to set your target language, starting level, and preferences. The mode field controls which mode you start in:

• "practice" — sessions only (default for new users)
• "ambient" — language woven into normal conversations
• "immersive" — primarily target-language responses

ambientContextThresholdDays controls how many days of practice before the assistant suggests graduating to ambient mode.

Data

All learning data is stored in data/learner-state.json inside the plugin directory. This includes:

• Vocabulary with spaced-repetition scheduling (SM-2 algorithm)
• Error patterns tracked over time
• CEFR level history
• Streak data
• Life context gathered during onboarding

Tools

• polyglot_assess — evaluate proficiency from learner state
• polyglot_flashcard — spaced-repetition review (get due cards, record review quality)
